We’ve been going back a bit in time to dig out this year’s heros of the month, but time only enhances their contribution rather than diminishes it.
Our heroes are Sir John Major and Ken Clarke MP for the simple reason that it was on their watch as Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer that both the VCT and EIS schemes were introduced. By the end of 2015 tax year these two schemes had pumped more than £6.4bn and £14.2bn respectively into the UK economy since the mid 1990’s...

Demosthenes is typically remembered as Democratic Athens’ last great orator, the man who started and lost a disastrous war with Phillip of Macedon (the father of Alexander the Great). The Secret Investor is still hidden away on holiday. He will be back next month

The term 'capital preservation' is often banded around within tax-efficient investment circles but often with differing meanings. This can therefore often lead to confusion for advisers and investors alike.
As far as I am concerned there are effectively three ways in which the term capital preservation can be interpreted, or has been misappropriated, and I believe it is important that financial advisers and investors understand which of these is being used when considering such propositions.

By Charles Owen, Founder and Director at CoInvestor
Entrepreneurs raising funds via SEIS and EIS are, on the whole, treading a well-worn path as they widen their circle of contacts in search of investment. Invariably they start by talking to friends and family; investors who are prepared to take a view on backing someone they know well and who might not look so closely at the underlying proposition. Once this route is exhausted our budding entrepreneur starts to seek out other private investors not previously known to them and then finally, dependent on how much is being raised or the stage of their business, will look to find an institutional investor.

So much of angel investment is about the here and now and often about the future, but we thought it was time to start remembering the angels in the past who changed the world by backing the most ambitious entrepreneurs of their time. We have, of course, to start with Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille who backed Christopher Columbus, (see below) but over the forthcoming months we will move forwards and backwards across the history of enterprise highlighting angels who contributed to making the world what it is today.
