The investment follows a period of significant growth at NWC, with revenues increasing by close to 100 percent since BGF’s first investment, from £7.5m in June 2014 to more than £14m in June 2017.

Startup founders should be prepared to put their money where their mouths are if they want to secure investment from business angels, according to research from University of Edinburgh Business School and the University of Glasgow’s Adam Smith Business School. In a study of more than 100 UK established investors – often known as business angels – 87% said they would find it too risky to back an entrepreneur who had not made a significant financial investment in their own venture.

The Association of Investment Companies (AIC) has responded to HM Treasury’s consultation Financing Growth in Innovative Firms. In its response, the AIC demonstrates how VCTs are an ideal means to raise much needed capital from retail investors to help smaller businesses grow. The AIC has also proposed measures to ensure VCT and EIS investment is focussed even more closely on young, innovative businesses. Key amongst these are a restriction on allowing VCT and EIS money to be used to purchase property.

Hobs Group has received a further £4m investment from BGF to continue the expansion of its 3D printing, reprographics, facilities management and legal support services businesses in the UK. This brings BGF’s total investment in Hobs to more than £11m.

An international study by specialist global insurer Hiscox reveals a confident tone among small businesses, with two-thirds (67%) reporting revenue growth and more than seven out of ten (71%) expanding their customer base in the past year. US and Spanish firms top the revenue growth tables. By contrast, in the UK there is a modest decline in the numbers reporting revenue growth.

The figures show a drop of some £230m in EIS fundraising in 2015-16 compared to the previous year, though the figure raised of £1.65bn was still the second highest ever amount raised since EIS began in 1993. There was a reduction of £8m in SEIS fundraising, which fell to £169m.

The number of deals completed on crowdfunding platforms has fallen for the first time on record. Deal numbers are down 17% against H2 2015.
Although fewer individual investments are being made, the average deal size is growing. Deals over £10m were the only investment bracket to increase in frequency, whilst investments under £250k declined by almost a third.
